Restoring an Irreplaceable Brooklyn Treasure: Holy Innocents Church.
Holy Innocents Church impacts all of us in this community. AND WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY, WE ARE PROUD TO SAY THAT WE ARE ON OUR WAY TO RESTORING A LANDMARK IN BROOKLYN ONCE AGAIN.
As a member of the Flatbush community, I’m sure you can appreciate that the church could become an important symbol of the renaissance that is budding throughout Brooklyn. And as we know, a successful renovation like this could add momentum to a community’s overall revitalization. This is a project that is sure to pay great dividends to the community and the local economy, and I hope you’ll SUPPORT IT.
Holy Innocents Church has seen better days. But it’s easy to see how beautiful this historic structure with it’s stately granite and limestone exterior could be. It’s worn and it’s dirty and it’s damaged, but you can tell just by looking at it that the church has the potential to be magnificent—some say a tourist attraction.
Just stroll around inside and you’ll get a sense of just how incredible it could be. Even though there’s water damage and 80 years of wear and tear—all of the sandstone, limestone, bath stone, and Italian marble rival New York City’s finest churches. And if you’re lucky enough to hear the sounds of the Skinner Organ (one of less than a handful in the New York area), I can safely say that you will know the sounds of heaven.
It’s a stunning structure, but I have to say, the most beautiful feature of this church isn’t the architecture, or the artistic details, or even the organ…
It’s the people who use this structure.
Holy Innnocents’ role in the community is truly touching. In the days of dwindling church attendance, parishioners representing Brooklyn’s multi-ethnic population attend services in English, Spanish and French Creole in impressive numbers.
But the diverse congregation represents only a part of Holy Innnocents’ visitors because the church is also a hub of activity for non-parishioners. Community Action Project (CAP), the Pacific Institute for Community Organizations (PICO), and visiting elected officials all use this structure for their gatherings.
These are just a few of the reasons why I HOPE THAT YOU, AS A MEMBER IN THIS COMMUNITY, WILL LEND YOUR SUPPORT TO THE RENOVATION OF HOLY INNOCENTS CHURCH. If you’re looking for a way to give back to the community, you’d have a hard time finding one that will touch more people in the Brooklyn area.
The fact is, this community needs this church. And right now, HOLY INNOCENTS needs our help. This is a project that can’t wait. This historic building has languished long enough! It’s time WE, THE CITIZENS AND CIVIC, BUSINESS AND RELIGIOUS LEADERS OF BROOKLYN, came together and restored the structure to its former proud state.
Please take your place alongside the other leaders of this community WHO ARE ALREADY LENDING THEIR SUPPORT TO THIS PROJECT so that this victory can belong to all of us.
Make your tax-deductible contribution of $1,000, $5,000 or $10,000 and place it in the envelope provided today. Together we will share in the pride of this great civic accomplishment.
