October 3-4, 2009
We come together, not as individuals but as a community, to give praise and thanks to God. We know that we find God in our communal relationships, and so today we are called to honor those relationships anew, whether they be with spouse, child, or friend. And so let us begin our prayer with a profound thankfulness for the presence of each other.
October 10-11, 2009
Brothers and sisters, this Sunday we hear another in a series of challenges from the Gospel of Mark. How hard it is to enter the kingdom of God, especially for those who have grown reliant on their wealth! Yet we also learn that all things are possible for God. So as we begin our celebration today, let us pray for an ever-increasing reliance on God, whose love and care for us make all things possible.
October 17-18, 2009
The Holy Spirit has gathered us here to learn again what it means to be a disciple. The challenges of our readings from Mark continue with a reminder of how easy it is to be distracted from our mission and seek recognition instead. Our task as disciples is rather to be servants; so as our liturgy begins today, let us ask God for the grace to be disciples who are focused on our mission to serve others rather than ourselves.
October 24-25, 2009
Brothers and sisters, we come at God’s invitation to give praise and thanksgiving for the wonderful gifts that God has given us. When we approach God with faith, our requests are granted. Such a response from God, however, can shake our world and change our lives. Let us pray today for the grace to know how to live our baptismal promises in a life changed and made bright and new by the gracious response of our Savior.
October 31 - November 1, 2009
Brothers and sisters, we gather here today at the invitation of our heavenly Father, who has blessed us with so many saints who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. As we have been learning discipleship at the feet of the evangelist Mark for a number of Sundays now, so we acknowledge these men and women of faith who also once learned to be disciples. Let us praise and thank God for the wonderful gift of their lives and pray that we, too, may one day join their number at the heavenly banquet.

Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
As we gather here today at the gracious invitation of God the Father, we know that each of us has come from a different place, with different expectations. Yet we all have a fervent desire to serve God in each other and in our neighbors. So when we approach the altar today, after hearing in God’s word about those who gave everything they had, let us pray that we will see the face of Christ in all those whom we meet and be ready to give to them whatever they need.

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Holy Spirit summons us here today to praise and thank God even to the very end of time. When history comes to an end, we will know God’s glory even as heaven and earth pass away. Contemplating that vision, we are reminded today of the task that lies before us as faithful disciples of our risen Savior. So let our prayer today be one of confidence and thanksgiving that even in our darkest hour God will stay with us and never abandon us.

Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King
Thirty-Fourth or Last Sunday in Ordinary Time
We come together this day to honor Jesus Christ as our Lord and King. In celebrating this solemnity, we acknowledge Jesus as the One in whom creation comes to completion, through whom salvation comes to us and our world, and for whom we act in the world. Let our prayer today be that God’s kingdom will come in us, through us, for us and all creation.

Thanksgiving Day, U.S.A.
We gather today to acknowledge our dependence on God for every good thing. Every Mass is a celebration of praise and thanksgiving, but today in particular we pause in our hectic lives to offer this prayer of gratitude for all God’s gifts. Even in the midst of economic stress and conflicts around the globe, it is good to remember the Source of all, to give thanks, and to pray for those who suffer from war, want, or injustice.
